Congratulations on the 75th anniversary of Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Oleksandr Mykolayovych Khimich

04.01.2026

Oleksandr Mykolayovych Khimich is a renowned scientist in the field of computer science. His scientific work concerns supercomputer technologies for solving problems in computational and applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, parallel algorithms, error theory, numerical software, and intelligent software systems.

Main scientific and practical results: a family of intelligent cluster architecture computers Inpark was created and implemented in production – a joint development of the Institute of Cybernetics of the NAS of Ukraine and the State Scientific and Production Enterprise "Electronmash," occupying a niche between personal computers and supercomputers; methods of parallel computations and computer algorithms for basic problems of computational mathematics with approximate data for MIMD computers and hybrid (MIMD, SIMD) architecture computers were developed and studied; a mathematical apparatus for computer research of machine models of problems with approximate data and means of assessing the reliability of computer solutions was developed; the theory of perturbations and error theory for pseudoinversion and weighted pseudoinversion problems was advanced (estimates were obtained for the first time for the case of rank mismatch of the original and perturbed matrices); estimates of the total error of solutions of linear systems by direct and iterative methods were obtained; for the first time, a layered-cyclic scheme of distribution and processing of information on parallel MIMD architecture computers was proposed; the scheme has entered global practice of parallel computing as a tool for constructing balanced parallel algorithms. O.M. Khimich is the head of the Shared Equipment Center of the supercomputer complex SKIT of the NAS of Ukraine.

Within applied research, software and hardware complexes for mathematical modeling of processes have been developed for the interests of the Antonov ASTC, the Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, the Tymoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the NAS of Ukraine, and the Ivchenko-Progress State Enterprise. The first domestic intelligent automation system for designing unique building structures (jointly with LIRA-SAPR company) was created and implemented in civil and industrial construction practice.

O.M. Khimich is the author of over 260 scientific works, including 13 monographs, some of which were published abroad. He has obtained 13 certificates of copyright for computer programs.

O.M. Khimich is a Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Education, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Laureate of the NAS of Ukraine Prize named after A.O. Dorodnitsyn, Laureate of the NAS of Ukraine Prize named after V.M. Glushkov.

Since 2020, he has been the academic secretary of the Department of Informatics of the NAS of Ukraine and carries out extensive scientific and organizational work.

In particular, on the initiative of O.M. Khimich, in 2022, based on the Scientific Council on the problem "Cybernetics" of the Department of Informatics of the NAS of Ukraine, a scientific seminar "Quantum Computing" was established. The seminar supports the activities of the NAS of Ukraine and other Ukrainian organizations in coordinating work on the development of breakthrough quantum computer technologies.

For a long time, O.M. Khimich has successfully combined scientific work with teaching activities. He is a professor at the Department of Computational Mathematics of the Faculty of Computer Science and Cybernetics at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, as well as a professor at the Department of Automated Information Processing and Control Systems of the Faculty of Informatics and Computer Engineering (FIOT) at the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute."

Oleksandr Mykolayovych pays special attention to editorial and publishing work. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal "Information Technologies and Systems," deputy editor-in-chief of the journal "Cybernetics and Systems Analysis," responsible editor of the collection of scientific papers "Mathematical and Computer Modeling"; a member of the editorial boards of the journals "Journal Numerical and Applied Mathematics," "Problems of Control and Informatics," "Reports of the NAS of Ukraine," "Bulletin of the NAS of Ukraine," as well as the collection of scientific papers "Cybernetics and Computer Technologies."

As the head of the NAS of Ukraine Working Group on Open Science, O.M. Khimich carries out extensive organizational work to implement European principles of open science in the NAS of Ukraine, centralized open science infrastructure, which will contribute to increasing the productivity of scientific research, deeper integration of Ukrainian scientists into the European research area, and more effective promotion of scientific results obtained by NAS of Ukraine scientists.

Since 2024, O.M. Khimich has been co-chair of the NAS of Ukraine Coordinating Scientific Council on Artificial Intelligence. Thanks to his significant organizational efforts, a Network of Regional Coordinating Scientific Centers of the NAS of Ukraine on Artificial Intelligence has been created. This facilitates the involvement of scientific institutions in solving problems related to the implementation of state policy in the development of artificial intelligence, coordination of regional scientists' activities in the field of artificial intelligence, scientific support of international agreement projects, and participation in the preparation of Ukraine’s documents within the framework of fulfilling its international obligations in artificial intelligence.

In 2025, with his active participation, the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine approved the draft Fundamentals of the Strategy for the Development and Application of Artificial Intelligence in the NAS of Ukraine. The relevance of creating a comprehensive academic strategy is driven by the need to transform Ukraine into a full-fledged participant in the global AI space, capable not only of generating fundamental knowledge but also producing applied breakthrough solutions for the needs of the state's security and resilience.

The Directorate of the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics, colleagues, and students sincerely congratulate Oleksandr Mykolayovych on his 75th birthday. We wish you strong health, spiritual and physical strength, inexhaustible life enthusiasm, and new achievements in scientific and public activities. May the future bring you many more happy years filled with creative energy, joy, kindness, and hope!
